Port Largo Eighth Annual Fishing Tournament Report
May 29, 2004
Port Largo held it’s eighth annual fishing tournament on Saturday May 29 out of the Port Largo Community Park. The Port Largo Residential Property Owners Association hosts the event with the purpose building community spirit and getting the residents together in a fun family atmosphere. The tournament was followed by a community picnic on Sunday where the catch was deep fried along with fritters and too many covered dishes to count. An Awards ceremony was held and various donated prizes were given to the winners. A good turnout and great fun was had by all.
Sixty-four anglers were registered in three different categories of anglers (adult, junior, and pewee). First, second and third place trophies and prizes were available in the three categories. Also a perpetual trophy was awarded for the angler with the largest dolphin. Additionally sponsoring businesses throughout the upper keys contributed prizes, which were awarded as door prizes to nearly every angler. A special thanks goes out to all the Sponsors. The donated prizes made the tournament special.
Weather conditions provided us with one of the windiest months of April and May forcing multiple postponements of the tournament from the original date of April 24 to the final date.
Tournament rules provided for each angler to enter only two fish with a point system for Billfish (40 pts. Per release), dolphin, wahoo, tuna (1 pt. Per lb.), grouper (2 pts. Per lb.) and snapper (3 pts. Per lb.). This helped level the playing field and allowed everyone to participate.
In the Pewee category, most unfortunately, there were no fish weighed.
In the Junior category (11 to 16), 1st place went to Frederick Dillon with 17.2 and 14.7 lb. Dolphin. And, 2nd place went to Leo Venero with 16.2 and 5.4 lb. Dolphin, unfortunately there were no other Junior fish weighed.
The Adult category had 1st place to Joe Torino with 21.8 and 14.1 lb. dolphin, 2nd place was John Trejo with 16.1 and 14.7 lb. dolphin, 3rd place went to Robert Yee with 15.5 and 15.2 lb. dolphin.
Best female angler award went Catherine Trejo with 15.0 and 14.9 lb. dolphin. The best boat award went to the “All Keyed Up”. The perpetual trophy for the largest dolphin went to Sandy Stringer with a 22.6 lb. dolphin.
