Port Largo Fishing Tournament Builds Community Spirit

Port Largo held it’s sixth annual fishing tournament on Sunday April 27 out of the Port Largo Community Park.  The Port Largo property owners association hosts the event with the purpose building community spirit and get the residents together in a fun family atmosphere.  The tournament was followed by a community picnic where the catch was deep fried along with fritters and too many covered dishes to count.  A grand turnout and great fun was had by all.

Sixty-five anglers on twenty three boats were registered in three different categories of anglers (adult, junior, and pewee).  First, second and third place trophies and prizes were awarded in the three categories.  Also a perpetual trophy was awarded for the angler with the largest dolphin.  Many sponsor businesses throughout the upper keys contributed prizes which were awarded as door prizes to nearly every angler.  A special thanks goes out to the Island Market for donating drinks and ice and generally being a great help.

Tournament conditions looked at the captain’s meeting held Friday afternoon April 25. The NOAA forecast for Saturday was east to southeast winds near 20 knots!  Community civics (along with a keg of beer) were at work as the anglers debated the pros and cons of moving the tournament one day or a full week.  A vote was finally taken and the decision made to move the tournament one day and have the picnic immediately after.  The wind Sunday morning hovered just below 15 knots with a forecast to diminish through the day so the tournament was on.  Some of the smaller boats and anglers stayed at the dock but the majority braved the early winds to put together a great catch of fish.  Leslie Milne of channel 6 weather put it best when she said it was “pleasantly breezy”.

Tournament rules provided for each angler to enter only two fish with a point system for Sailfish, Marlin (release only), dolphin, wahoo, tuna, snapper and grouper. This somewhat levels the playing field and allows everyone to participate.  Fish weigh-in started at about 1:00 PM and ended at 4:00 PM.

The winners in the Pewee category (10 and under) were:

1st place – Johnny Munshower 8.7 lb. Grouper,

2nd place Ben Lapointe with 0.7 and 0.5 lb. snappers.
