NEWSLETTER -- March 2001
|
The Annual meeting of the PORT LARGO RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY OWNER’S ASSOCIATION was held February 10, 2001 at the Key Largo Civic Club.
Our guest speakers were Ricardo Calvo, Fla. Keys Carrying Capacity Study, who explained that no other study like this has ever been done. The value of this study is creating awareness among citizens; and that our political leaders will be able to use this tool to make decisions and will be accountable to us as aware citizens. Marlene Conway, Monroe County Planning Board says her job will be to take the information Ricardo puts out, assuring that this information is used for major decisions making our communities the way we want them to be. Murray Nelson, Monroe County Commissioner, spoke to us about the affordable housing issue and FEMA (downstairs enclosures). He assured us the commission is listening to the citizens and will set policy accordingly. Murray especially thanked Port Largo for support during his accident last May and also during his campaign. Dick Lancaster, Island of Key Largo Federation of Homeowners Associations (IKLFHA), said this is the first time Key Largo has had a unifying voice and that they expect more condo and homeowners associations to join this federation whose intent is to provide homeowners with a voice to get things done. Marshall Walker said the important thing about this federation is the opportunity for our PLRPOA to voice an opinion on any issue which the majority of you feel is important. Consensus sheets were passed out for homeowners to indicate positions on major areas of concern. Look for the questionnaire with more questions added on page two of this newsletter. Kurt Stelzner, YMCA told us about his programs including after school programs which emphasize caring, respect, honesty and our kids doing their best. He presented some petitions regarding issues at the park which were on the front table for signatures.
Dues for 2001 remain at $100. New keys for the Homeowner’s park are available upon payment of dues. The lock was changed as scheduled on February 24, 2001. You may contact Frances Simmons (451-1790) to renew your membership and arrange to pick up your new card and key.
Accomplishments for the past year were listed in our January newsletter. John Wood thanked Gerry Cooper for taking care of the bad odors coming from the Holiday Inn last year. Our heartfelt thanks to Frances Simmons who has dedicated so many years of service to our community! We thank all of our association members who have helped during this past year to make Port Largo a better place to live!
